What we do

How we started, who leads us, and we are about

Our History

16th Century: Origins

Founded around 1539, the original structure began as a simple "chapel of ease" to serve locals for whom the journey to the primary parish church was too far.

18th Century: Rebuilding in Stone

Between 1716 and 1718, the original chapel was demolished and rebuilt into the impressive stone structure seen today. Designed by architect Henry Sephton, the build was largely funded by James Scarisbricke, a Liverpool merchant who donated £200 toward its construction. The new chapel featured a classical design with Doric columns, a round apse, and a small tower topped with a bell cupola.

19th Century: Growth & Independence

As the local population expanded, galleries were added to the north and south walls in 1823–1824 to increase seating. In 1828, St. Aidan's officially separated from the mother parish to become an independent parish church.

20th Century: Major Expansion & Preservation

In 1907–1908, prestigious architect Thomas Graham Jackson redesigned and extended the building. The old galleries were removed, the round apse was moved eastward, and a new south transept and choir area were added. On August 23, 1966, the building was officially designated as a Grade II listed building, recognising its architectural significance.
